Eriosyce napina ssp. glabrescens is a rare, small cactus native to Atacama Desert in Chile. It is a tiny Chilean geophyte with a glossy, nearly spineless pinkish body and a turnip-like taproot—its name means “woolly fig” (Eriosyce), “turnip-like” (napina), and “becoming smooth” (glabrescens). What makes it special is that it loses its spines with age, developing a jewel-like, glaucous surface topped by disproportionately large, silky flowers.
