Cactus- Stenocactus ochoterenanus| Large mature plant (3.5" pot)
Stenocactus ochoterenanus—whose species name honors Mexican botanist Isaac Ochoterena—is a compact, globular cactus reaching roughly 4 inches tall and 4 inches wide. With age it will make a cluster. The main stem has about 30 narrow, wavy ribs and a dense covering of spines that nearly obscures its blue-green body. What makes it special is the spectacular spination: four stout, flattened central spines that age from yellow to straw, surrounded by over 20 glassy white radial spines, all crowning a plant that produces repeated flushes of light pink flowers with a deep purple stripe down each petal from late winter through spring. Grow it in full sun to partial shade with a gritty, well-draining mix, water thoroughly when the top inch of soil dries in summer, and keep it dry in winter at 40–50°F; it's hardy to 25°F and will tolerate brief dips to 20°F.
