General Care Instructions

For your new cactus and succulent

  1. Open your box ASAP when receiving your plants. Never expose them under direct sun upon arrival.

  2. Use well draining soil. Our general recommendation: Use 2 parts potting soil with 3 parts mineral grits if you live in a desert climate;  1 part potting soil with 3-4 parts mineral grits if you live in a tropical or subtropical climate. **Please adjust accordingly to your local climate type and the species of plant you grow.

  3. To encourage root establishment, in spring and summer, pot the plants you receive from us into slightly moist soil. Keep them at a warm and bright place away from direct sun. The location of placement should be well ventilated. Gradually water a week later. In fall and winter, plant them into dry soil, if your night time temperature stays above 55F, slightly water in a week AND keep the soil mostly dry from November to March. It is recommended to keep all NEW cacti and succulents above freezing temperature during winter, and restrict from watering if temperature is below 45F.

  4. During growing season for new plants to establish, introduce small amount of water slowly; do not water before the soil dries out for cacti and succulents. Frequency of watering will be dependent upon your local climate and the microenvironment you provide for the plants.

  5. Expect to see new cacti and succulents to show signs of active growing in 1-2 weeks in growing season (Spring to fall); 1-2 month for slow growing species in growing season. During late fall and winter months, most cacti enter dormancy and may not be responsive to watering. It is best to restrict watering and let them rest until spring. It is normal for them to shrink in mass and show stress in colors. In spring, gradually move your new cacti and succulents to receive more sunlight after the plant shows new growth.

  6. Most tender succulents, spineless cacti and young plants perform the best under 50% filtered sunlight or direct morning sun, mid-day/afternoon shade. Most other cacti and big potted specimens appreciate 30% filter sunlight during the day. Some hardy and spiny cactus species grow the best receiving a fair amount of direct sunlight each day.
